MARKET TALK
BIG-NAME STUDIOS ENTERING CRYPTO
Through the past years, we have seen a decent # of the big brand names and studios in Web2 bring an initiative to Web3. A few examples include:
Ubisoft, HOMA Games, LimitBreak, MapleStory, Zynga, and not to forget to a handful of Japanese and Korean legacy studios
Many companies completely failed and left Web3, some of them are still in development, and some initially failed, but are still trying
Over time we kind of train ourselves to understand what kind of Web3 initiative by a Web2 company is bullish and what’s not
Important factors seem the project’s scale, vision, allocation of resources, investment, and willingness to embrace Web3. Plus, maybe the most important one, Web3-PMF
The larger and grander the above factors, the less likely they’re here to extract, usually
So, here’s where we arrive at the recent news of EVE’s Online Web3 initiative, EVE Frontier. It fits the boxes of:
A Web3 integration that makes sense for a Space Survival MMO, with risk (destruction-based) elements and a deep game economy
Web3 fits with the existing behavior of EVE Online, which led to the creation of grey markets
Furthermore, the focus of EVE Frontier is to make players builders of the universe (UGC). Web3 makes these systems easier
The studio taking a large risk in terms of losing brand value
Many EVE Online players weren’t happy about CCP Games choosing Web3
EVE Frontier is an ambitious project that aims to become an autonomous world, co-created and owned by the players
Overall, EVE Frontier falls in the category of a more bullish and genuine attempt than most other Web2 studios. But, time will tell whether this is true because you never know in crypto…
WILL BINANCE BRING BACK THE TON NARRATIVE?
Last week Binance announced both CATI and HMSTR will be listed on the exchange
It’s been a while since we’ve seen one of the large TON games TGE, the last token was Pixelverse’s PIXFI token.
To recap, PIXFI opened at a ~$100M FDV, then went to a ~$500M FDV at its peak, and is now trading at a ~28M FDV. I.e. it’s down bad because nobody is using the token (yes, I was wrong about PIXFI…)
The success of both CATI and HMSTR will determine whether the TON gaming narrative returns
Binance listings will ensure there will be enough volume but on the other hand, we are in worse conditions than when NOT launched
NOT set the expectations and I believe they are higher now (when it comes to Catizen), because they have 1M paying users
Whether the airdrop will be worth “enough” to make farmers happy is hard to say. Likely not, since there are too many qualifying users, diluting the airdrop amount per user
Lastly, we know that CATI has been making a “TON” of money, $27M ($27 per paying user).
The question is whether they can sustain this revenue, as the assumption is that 90%+ of users are spending to increase the size of their airdrop
On the other hand, they have been working on funneling players into their Mini Game Center to increase the value capture and revenue per user
In a recent post, Catizen detailed the token will be used for: discounts on in-game items, launch pool & earn rewards, an airdrop pass, fee discounts in TradingBot, and Meowdrop Airdrops
ON THE RISE
Binance Labs invests in 4 top-performing projects, part of the Most Valuable Builder Program
Sidekick Labs was part of these 4 projects: “The Consolidation Hub For social, games & beyond”
DRFT Party becomes one of the 10 top-grossing apps on Telegram
If I had to make a guess, I’d assume their revenue is in the $1-3M range
TonTon Games also just onboarded this new game called DonTon
Cambria started releasing more info about their upcoming Founders’ NFT collection and playtest in October
