WEMADE ONBOARDS: ROM:GOLDEN AGE TO WEMIX
The crypto gaming platform, Wemix, announced it had onboarded a new MMORPG on the platform: ROM: Golden Age (GA). It looks pretty similar to PoE
A new title brought by RedLab Games, the makers of ROM: Remember of Majesty (ROM)
ROM is an MMORPG for mobile and PC that was released in early 2024, which saw mediocre success in the Asian market. GA is the crypto-enabled version of the game, launching in Q3 2025
Wemix claims the title had “outstanding success”, but looking at some of the numbers makes me question whether the transition to crypto was genuine or out of desperation
With this title, they are claiming to bring a new standard in the crypto MMORPG space, that includes: “unlimited minting, guaranteed value, and a fast & simplified P2E model”
Whether these promises are marketing speak or something “revolutionary” has yet to be seen. It doesn’t sound very sustainable, though
A couple of months ago, we spoke of Wemix’s largest title, Night Crows, and how it was on a path to make $200M in revenue in less than 2 years
However, Night Crows isn’t really considered a “crypto game” since the team cut out the game’s P2E features, doesn’t care about the community, and the WEMIX token doesn’t benefit from the game’s success
Hence why, CT doesn’t care too much about Wemade
How GA is being positioned seems a shot and recapturing the interest of (more) crypto natives. But that’s just my guess…
ONCADE RAISES $4M FROM A16Z
About a week ago, Oncade announced it raised $4M in a round led by A16Z to build its community-driven game platform
A platform that aims to solve the business of gaming through “turning passionate communities into powerful distribution channels”
Oncade might be the 15th company pitching this idea. A recent example is REACH, the joint venture of Overworld and Champions Ascension. Another example is Ultra, which announced a $12M funding round a few months ago
By cutting out the middleman (e.g., Steam), studios will be able to prevent the “crushing 30% platform fees”, giving them the power to reclaim control over their margins and turn communities into sales channels ~ GamesBeat
A stablecoin protocol will back Oncade, allowing studios and players to create, sell, and earn as affiliates. Furthermore, it offers the following features to developers:
Direct payments (real-time revenue), branded storefronts, community-powered presales and wishlists, liveops tools, and more
The common problem with this approach, that it is fundamentally flawed, without a strong flagship title that can drive traffic
Without it, there’s no appealing reason for other games to join your platform, because you won’t have any users (distribution)
We all know how Steam started, yet all these platforms are skipping the most important step: content first + then grow into infra (verticalization)
PIXELS x SLEEPAGOTCHI
Today, Pixels announced another expansion of the $PIXEL ecosystem by partnering with Sleepagotchi, the “Sleep to Earn” app. The first partnership outside of the Ronin ecosystem
As part of strengthening the $PIXEL token ecosystem, Pixels introduced staking just over a couple of weeks ago, starting across the first three games: Core Pixels, Pixels Dungeons, and Forgotten Runiverse
Sleepagotchi now joins this ecosystem. Users can stake $PIXELS in the game, spend $PIXEL on in-game items, and earn $PIXEL for in-game activities
The more $PIXELS is staked to Sleepagotchi, the larger incentive pool it receives to distribute to its players
Sleepagotchi is a mini-app that lives on the web, Telegram, and LINE, claiming to have amassed over 2 million Telegram users + having 100K WAUs. This could serve as a new player- or holder base Pixels can tap into
I do have my reservations about the spending depth of the Telegram user base. On the contrary, the larger TG apps of last year managed to pull in millions of $ in revenue pre-TGE through the premise of “spend 2 earn more”
Similarly, in the current Sleepagotchi LITE experience, players’ in-game actions will translate to tokens for the upcoming TGE
Users will be able to spend their $PIXELS on the in-game store to unlock gems, Gacha packs, and exclusive content (assumingly, through the web experience)
Overall, Pixels continues to stay on top of improving its token ecosystem through its “decentralized publishing model,” and so creating more reasons to hold and spend the $PIXEL token
Despite recent changes in favor of the token, it remains down 90% from its ATH. After all, it remains an uphill battle for the team to improve this chart, but at least they are giving it a good shot
