OPENSEA UPDATE: SEA IS COMING
7 months after first confirming the SEA token, OpenSea (OS) finally came out with an update that more info about TGE will be revealed in early October (the classic announcement of an announcement)
Other than that, the NFT marketplace had a couple of other updates regarding OS mobile, a flagship collection, and a “final rewards phase”
In July, OS acquired Rally, a mobile wallet company. This acquisition accelerated OS’s token trading capabilities, including portfolio tracking, candlestick charts, faster price updates, and more
Part of the company’s expansion strategy: “…quickly transforming OpenSea from an NFT marketplace into the best place to trade anything onchain”
Personally, I have used the swapping feature and trading feature a couple of times, and the experience was pretty smooth, I must say
But also, when checking the trading volume on certain pairs through OS, it remains clear that the NFT marketplace still has a (long) way to go to build awareness around token trading
OS is introducing a mobile app, which aims to simplify the trading experience by bringing all your wallets in one place through one view of your portfolio
With this app, it’s also launching “OpenSea intelligence”, an AI-native trading experience that helps you make better decisions based on your portfolio
OS is building its own flagship collection “with over one million dollars committed to acquiring historic NFTs and work from emerging artists”, starting with the acquisition of CryptoPunk #5273
Furthermore, the collection has acquired a Pudgy Penguin
OS will start to sweep millions in tokens + NFTs into a massive prize vault for the final pre-TGE phase of rewards
From September 15th, 50% of all platform fees (1% of NFTs and 0.85% for tokens) will fuel this program, with $1M OP and ARB already in the vault
For reference, OS generated $195M in NFT volume last month. So, a month of fees (from NFTs) would equate to ~$1M in fees added to the prize pool
Next week, they will introduce a chest, which can be leveled up through trading, completing Voyages, and collecting Shipments. The Treasures will play an important role in the SEA TGE
Overall, it’s remarkable to experience the “OpenSea renaissance” this year, now taking 46.8% of the market share in volume (in the past week)
I believe this was a combination of many of its partnerships, mint support, OS streams, and, of course, the token campaign played a huge role
OH BABY GAMES FOUNDATION
The Oh Baby Foundation account just popped up, and that means we can likely expect a token coming soon
There have been a lot of developments in the OBB ecosystem lately, so let’s reflect on these, but start with some history:
OBB raised $6M in funding in a seed round in January 2023, led by eGirl Capital and Synergis Capital. During this round, we also saw participation from Kevin Lin, the co-founder of Twitch
OBB’s first game, which was showcased on their Twitter, was a 2D platformer (Torri). Then, they showed off a rogue-like battler (Shogun’s Curse) that was in the works. In August 2023, Passy (the founder) teased a new party game as well
The title they’re most known for is the kart racer, Oh Baby Kart, which started Alpha testing in Q2 - Q3 2023. In December 2023, they announced a partnership with SpongeBob SquarePants
The closed beta was released in January 2024. In April 2024, they launched the open beta. Now, OBK has been available on Steam for a little while and receives regular updates
In March 2024, we were met with a trailer, showing off the multiple games they had in development, revealing new titles such as a platform fighter game (Bam Bam Boom), an open-world monster collector, and an FPS game
This year, the team released a trailer for a new roguelike deckbuilder called Pakwer and released a demo on Steam (which was live until last Sunday)
And this week, we were met with another trailer for an early game, which looks like an Anime MMORPG
In total, the OBB ecosystem consists of 7 games (2 still being unannounced), all of which are in different stages of development. Oh Baby Kart and Bam Bam Boom are the most mature titles
The approach they’re taking of building 7 titles simultaneously, in popular game genres, is rather interesting and leaves questions about the size of the studio (which is based in Colombia), what they focus on, and where the success will come from
RONIN CHOOSES OPTIMISM
On August 15, Ronin announced its “coming home to Ethereum” (discussed in GC Alpha 62). This week, the team announced that Optimism will be the L2 provider to do so
The decision was made after a vote by Ronin’s Governing Validators to pick Optimism’s OP Stack. Other offers came from Arbitrum, Polygon, and zkSync
It was either going to be OP and ARB, which both sweetened their offers to Ronin around a week ago
Perks of integrating with OP for Ronin include 15 times faster transactions, enhanced security, development support, and collaboration opportunities with superchains (e.g., Base). The offer also included $5-7M in milestone grants (in OP, ZKC, and EIGEN tokens)
It seems Ronin will not be using a regular ZK Rollup + OP Rollup, but a modified version that combines the best features into a hybrid solution, to offer a fast chain, with quick settlement and withdrawals
Ronin, building on the OP stack, includes partnering with a team of technical collaborators, including Eigen Layer, Boundless, Conduit, and Flashbots
On potential superchain collabs:
“Ronin users, creators, and builders may be eligible for airdrop and growth campaigns involving other Superchain networks and communities”
Post migration, RON will continue to be the token used for gas fees
The OP Stack powers Coinbase’s Base chain, Uniswap’s Unichain, Sony’s Soneium, among other L2s
Integrations like these are rather technical. Yet, it’s interesting to look at this from a CT perspective. Would partnering with Arbitrum, for instance, be more bullish and marketable?
Maybe, as they do have a larger B2C presence. Yet, OP offered more money + probably a better tech solution than Arbitrum could
