🗞️ NEWS
RAGNAROK LANDVERSE JOINS RONIN
Last week, Ronin announced one of the largest Web3 games (by revenue) is joining their ecosystem: Ragnarok Landverse (RL)
If you have been following this newsletter you might remember that we talked about RL before, specifically in GC Alpha 10
To remind you, here’s a high-level overview of the game and the ecosystem:
Zentry acquired a majority stake in the Maxion studio last June. Maxion is the game publisher of RL and has a formal partnership with Gravity (the creator of the Ragnarok IP)
RL is a spin on the classic Ragnarok Online IP. The game was officially launched on September 20, 2023. To date, the game has generated over $15M in revenue through in-game items and NFT sales (so without its own token)
Additionally, through the release of Zentry’s whitepaper, it was shared that Maxion has 4 more titles in the pipeline and will have a separate MAXI token
The publishing strategy will focus on bringing popular traditional gaming titles into Web3
The version of the game on Ronin, Ragnarok Landverse: Genesis is mentioned to be a “fresh experience”
Genesis will launch on the chain in Q1 2025, and the existing servers of RL will migrate at a later date
You can now pre-register for “Mystery Rewards” on their website
I wonder if this title will take away mindshare from Ravenquest. Both gamesoffer a nostalgic MMORPG experience, however, RL: Genesis has the large advantage of using a big IP
WHAT IS THE FUNKI CHAIN?
Funki is “a playground for the next digital culture”, which launched its mainnet a couple of days ago
It’s the ”first Superchain L2 dedicated to digital culture and experimentation”, backed by Optimism
Mentioned to be built for AI, gaming, and social. Optimized for consumer applications
Funki aims to be “experimental”, a testing ground for how games, AI, and blockchain can fuse
Examples they provide include: giving in-game AI NPCs wallets, instant interoperability between games, and procedurally generated content verified onchain
The chain was grounded by Tin Nguyen, the founder of Sipher (the top-down roguelike) and Ather Labs (the studio)
It looks like Sipher will be launching on PlayStation as well
They have also been working on GAIA, a collaborative AI platform to give human and AI Agents “superpowers”
I assume their apps and ecosystems will live on the Funki chain
You can now mint a Funki badge if you held Sipher NFT assets or visit them on Zora and create an Ather ID. This seems like one of the first assets on the chain, so might be worth it
Do we have too many L2s? Yes. Does Funki sound interesting? Yes. I’d mainly be interested in what kind of role AI will play, and if they can push the boundaries of these integrations on an app and chain-level
FORKAST IS COMING TO RONIN
Only two days ago Ronin announced prediction markets are coming to the chain, through Forkast
Forkast is a prediction market focused on gaming, so users will be able to bet on esports games/events, streamers, and Web3 (e.g. will RON flip X token by Q1)
It’s an initiative coming out of Community Gaming, a platform that automates tournaments
Forkast will launch in Q1, as part of Ronin’s strategy to drive DeFi engagement and adoption
I assume we will expect many more of these announcements in January as part of “open Ronin”
Interestingly, BEN.ZZZ (the founder of Cambria) commented on a post from Jihoz, saying this is huge for Cambria, and further says:
“first use case is prediction markets on top guilds over a season and having the betting influence guild performance itself - e.g. people taking out hits on top guild earners to tip the scales”
It is quite fascinating how these markets can create a financial meta layer for players and spectators, which can influence (risk-seeking) behavior inside the game.
So even as someone who doesn’t have the time to compete in Cambria, I can be involved by making predictions
Lastly, I would mention that the idea of gaming-focused prediction markets or layers isn’t new, and we have seen similar ideas erupt:
Soulbound TV is building a “Stream.Bet.Earn.Win” platform
ThousandsTV is bringing crypto-native infra, community, content, and creators together on their platform and will have similar features
It does seem the two other examples will focus on making the viewing experience more involved through betting/predictions, and Community Gaming might be more of a Polymarket model
