TRUMP IS BUILDING A CRYPTO GAME?
Trump planning to build a crypto game wasn’t on my 2025 bingo card (like many other things, to be honest), yet here we are…
He’s planning to launch a game resembling Monopoly GO! later this month, in a Trump-style theme. Players will be able to earn in-game tokens and develop digital cities
Bill Zanker, part of the team that launched the president’s memecoin, the FIGHT memecoin, and various NFT collections, is leading the development of the game
Of course, this questionable rap sheet creates concerns about whether this is another grift
Can this put crypto gaming in a positive light, or will it be harmful?
OG argues this will bring mass media attention, break the stigma of crypto gaming, and bring more interest to the space
The pessimists argue that this will only worsen the reputation of our industry
I see both arguments and remain mixed…
Bull case: the game is successful, with millions of players and revenue generated, and lasts a couple of months before it collapses
This not only signals a positive experience to players, but also a validation of the crypto business model to game developers
Bear case: it’s a huge extraction event in hundreds of millions of $, which collapses within a week, and leaves players in the dust
In this case, the statement that “crypto gaming is a scam” is further validated
Many questions about what the game will look like, if it will be mobile, which chain it will launch on, and if it will use the TRUMP token remain unanswered
Sovereign brings up a good question about whether game revenue will be used for TRUMP token buybacks
OVERTAKE RELEASED ITS VISION PAPER
Perhaps one of the more “boring” companies building on top of crypto gaming, OVERTAKE, just released its Vision Paper. Here are some of the highlights:
OVERTAKE is introducing a smart contract-based marketplace for trustless trading, real ownership, and scalable player economies
The marketplace…
1) Replaces the fragmented and risky Web2 asset trading experience using a Web3 escrow layer
2) Directly connects with game publishers to verify and tokenize in-game assets
3) Becomes a modular protocol that developers can plug into their games. Using SDKs, APIs, dashboards, etc., studios can integrate escrow, payments, and token features without building them themselves
Overtake’s infrastructure essentially becomes invisible
The latter is what I am the most bullish on personally:
“The more embedded a marketplace is. The higher the conversion. The most successful (mass) marketplaces will be bolted on Web3 games. Convenience > evading royalties.”
Just like what we’re seeing with Gigaverse, which saw a huge spike in trading volume after introducing the in-game Gigamarket
So far, OVERTAKE partnered with Somnis: Rumble Rush to build a marketplace that connects to both Immutable and directly to the game’s backend
Furthermore, it’s working with Sui to support nested and dynamic NFTs
Looking forward to OVERTAKE integrating its solution into more games. A tech stack that builds on existing behavior and improves the experience
MAPLESTORY UNIVERSE HENESYS LAUNCH
Last week, MapleStory Universe launched its Henesys (named after the in-game starting village) L1 on Avalanche. The article, “Where Nostalgia Meets Innovation in Web3 gaming”, was published with it. Here are the highlights:
The custom Avalanche L1 will be powered by AvaCloud and support gasless transactions and item scarcity. Furthermore, there will be a toolkit for developers to build “Synergy Apps” (decentralized experiences), and the chain supports the NXPC token.
NXPC won’t be designed as a speculative token, but a “derivative of item value”. It gains value according to players creating, enhancing, and trading items
“Think of it as the economic backbone that ties everything together, from gameplay and UGC to DeFi layers and beyond.”
The game’s “Participate-to-own” narrative focuses on benefiting (earning) from your contributions to the growth of MSU’s ecosystem
This means it will be less interesting for farmers and more interesting for developers and creators to be involved
Moreover, the article details that after Henesys, we can expect a public explorer to track item ownership and transactions, an integration of NFT-based name reservations, and expansion of the NXPC contribution and reward system
1mpal expects that the whitepaper will be released soon + a TGE at the end of this month
Furthermore, he predicts an initial airdrop of less than 1%
“No one’s going to get rich off an airdrop, but within a month or two after launch, there will be a chance for everyone to show off their gains.”
With MSU’s grand launch coming closer, it makes me wonder about how they will re-activate (former) fans of the franchise
It looks like they’re taking more of a Path 1 (mainstream) approach; however, they are also deploying more resources in Path 2 (crypto-native) than Off the Grid, for example
Undoubtedly, South Korea and Japan will be some of their largest markets
MSU is one of crypto gaming’s best shots on goal, and with a minimal allocation to players (i.e., farmers), so it will be interesting to see how this TGE pans out
